Increasing Outreach and the Visibility of Data Resources through the Usage of Social Media

Abstract:  With the increasing popularity of social media, traffic safety professionals have focused on responding specifically to members of the public. Various government agencies have developed issue-specific campaigns and promotional materials - efforts that have undoubtedly increased awareness regarding public safety issues and saved lives. The community of traffic safety professionals, though, can draw on their full capabilities of social media through utilizing platforms to connect with other agencies in addition to the public. This session will begin with a short presentation on how the LSU Highway Safety Research Group is working to increase its visibility and outreach using new media - specifically through the application of visualizations. A discussion will follow where participants can bring their ideas and needs to the table, discuss common problems, brainstorm solutions, and further develop best practices. This discussion will allow participants to offer up suggestions on various topics such as increasing accessibility to resources with by giving them more visibility and using social media as a method of performance improvement in measures outside of accessibility.
